THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
The Harlem Renaissance was the period of "cultural, social, and artistic explosion" that took place in Harlem between approximately 1917 and 1935 (pbs.org). Although this period saw a rise in recognition of African American writers such as Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, Nella Larsen, and Zora Neale Hurston and their work, Pauline Hopkins is often overlooked as a Harlem Renaissance writer since she lived and wrote in Boston over a decade before the movement began. However, her work for The Colored American Magazine, which eventually moved from Boston to New York, paved the way for the movement.
